For Cities without Highways

1/ On Monday, @NYCMayor @NYC_DOT announced a $4 billion, decade-long plan to rehabilitate the just 1.5 mile stretch of BQE Central. Here's why that would be a huge mistake:

"The question is not whether the BQE needs to be repaired. The question is what transportation system should replace its present function. That distinction is the starting point for a different future. A Different Highway Is Not a Different Transportation System." We agree. archpaper.com/2026/10/brookl…

"Rebuilding the BQE as a conventional highway would be more than an engineering decision. It would be a declaration that we remain unable—or unwilling—to imagine a different relationship between transportation and urban life. "We should not accept that limitation."

The MTA is proposing a new 125 Street Subway, which would extend west from the future 125 St/Lexington Av Q station. The project would connect existing subway lines—including the Second Avenue Subway—and bus routes along the corridor. Learn more about this project at a public scoping meeting; we're hosting two virtual sessions on October 22, and one in-person session on October 27. More and more people *are* saying
The price of gas isn’t dropping anytime soon. Coupled with the costs associated with owning a car, the need for meaningful investments in public transit is dire. Be a strong advocate for public transit investment in your community.

.@NYCMayor’s new plan to make NYC streets safer is a huge step in the right direction, and we’re proud to see that several Open Plans campaigns made the list! Here’s a look at a few key components of the new Vision Zero plan that we’ve been working on 1/ nyc.gov/assets/visionzero/do…

Don't just designate, do something
Some of NYC’s slowest traffic days of the year are ahead.   We’ve designated 20 Gridlock Alert Days though the end of 2026, beginning September 21st during the @UN General Assembly and continuing through the holiday season.   Learn more and plan ahead: nyc.gov/gridlockalert

This is 100% correct. I hadn’t really looked at the math before, but it leads to only one conclusion
Cindy is absolutely right about the BQE, and you know what? She manages to do this argument without mentioning Robert Moses. Good. It's starting to dawn on people that constantly blaming Moses weakens their case. We are in charge now. nydailynews.com/2026/09/04/m…

"A large part of the state’s plan to reduce emissions relies on drastically cutting down on car usage."
New York’s biggest upstate cities are making room for bikes. Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, and Albany — three of which are headed by progressive mayors elected last November — are reshaping their streets to make cycling less dangerous and more practical. nysfocus.com/2026/09/09/upst…

So, if the size of highways correlates with the growth of a city and region, why is Cincinnati filled with freeways, while Tokyo, which is 22 times bigger, is not?

Mamdani seems to suggest that the city would have been better off if Moses hadn't built the BQE. So why repair it for another 40 years? Let's not kick the can down the road to 2080. Now is the time to find a path forward from this inhumane piece of infrastructure.
We're done kicking the can down the road. Here's how we're fixing the city-owned section of the BQE.

You're talking about at least a 14 year plan end to end. Surely you can find time in that window to look into closing some exits.

Hey Nick, Stuff like this is exactly what I'm talking about. We can spend $4 billion on a mile of highway but we can't fix up a path along the river. nyc.streetsblog.org/2026/08/…

It's actually crazy how many of the intractable problems in this city aren't solvable because of cars. They really are the root cause to a lot of dense city problems! nyc.streetsblog.org/2026/08/…

NYC and Robert Moses in a nutshell: NYC needed A Robert Moses. Instead, it got The Robert Moses. And that made all the difference…

“It’s amazing that 15 years later we’re still talking about deterioration of the East River Esplanade in this very location,” said @HunterArmstr0ng, co-chair of @greenways4NYC. “It’s incredibly frustrating how little progress has taken place and it feels like the same issues.”

Really good and thoughtful analysis here. Nine out of ten vehicles on the BQE are not trucks. xitter.cf/OffRampNYC/status/2092…

5/ "But it's a critical freight corridor." DOT's own numbers: 130,000 vehicles a day, 13,000 of them trucks. Nine out of ten vehicles up there aren't freight. $4B to preserve a truck route where 90% of the traffic isn't trucks.
