In the scramble to respond to a global pandemic, I watched in awe as the vast majority of ordinary Britons came together with quiet decency, courage and altruism. Not quite everyone though - as today’s damning report from the UK Covid-19 inquiry chair, Heather Hallett, lays bare. Boris Johnson’s infamous β€˜VIP’ lane for PPE procurement wasted an eye-watering Β£10bn of public money by favouring suppliers with connections to government, despite their abject lack of experience. Cronies like Michelle Mone squandered hundreds of millions of pounds of taxpayers’ money on useless, unfit-for-purpose PPE, all while lining their corrupt, bottomless coffers. β€œThe waste of public money was vast and could have been avoided, says Hallet. "Of approximately Β£14.9bn spent on PPE, nearly two thirds – almost Β£10bn – was wasted.” Meanwhile, NHS doctors, nurses and care sector staff were forced to work with pitifully adequate PPE and lack of essential healthcare equipment such as ventilators. We couldn’t protect ourselves - or those in our care - from infection. I will never forget those plastic pinnies so thin they tore apart in your hands, and the paper masks so flimsy the ear loops fell off as you unfolded them. Hancock and Johnson will forever crow that they were heroes. But frontline staff in hospitals like mine will never forget the fear, the pressure, the staggering loss of life and our colleagues - who died of the deadly disease they caught while trying so valiantly to save others.

Why aren’t Matt Hancock and Boris Johnson in jail for manslaughter?

Rather than building new infrastructure our Lords & Masters decided it’s best to maximises their profits via a rent seeking model on antiquated infrastructure by changing the ownership from public to private & then pushing all the risk onto the public whilst whacking up prices😱!

Under capitalism, it's very normal to let children go hungry, let banks force people out of their homes, let sick people dΔ±Δ— for lack of access to healthcare. But the idea that billionaires could just be less rich, not poor, not struggling, just less rich, is considered insane.

America take note! It’s not left vs right. It’s the rich vs the poor.

If past precedent is anything to go by, Kemi Badenoch's Β£10bn British iron dome contact will either go to Michelle Mone or the landlord of Matt Hancock's local pub

In 1979-80 the cost of local authority elderly residential care was Β£63 per week, which was 58% of an average wage. In 2026 it is Β£1298, or 184% of an average wage. Privatisation of care is basically a letter of marque. Licence for the depraved to prey on the desperate.

The British school dinner was invented by the army, after it tried to recruit for a war and found the country's young men too stunted to send. In 1899 Britain went to war in South Africa and called for volunteers. In Manchester 11,000 men came forward. The army doctors sent 8,000 of them home. They were too short, too thin, with bad chests, rotten teeth and legs bent by rickets. The minimum height had already been cut to five feet. A general wrote it up in a magazine under the title Where to Get Men. He put it plainly. Three out of five who offered themselves were unfit to carry a rifle. Parliament panicked. It set up a Committee on Physical Deterioration, which toured the slums and reported in 1904. Its finding was that the men had been ruined as children, by hunger, and that no amount of drill would fix at eighteen what had not been fed at eight. It recommended that the state give hungry children a hot meal at school. The Act passed in 1906. Within a generation there was a cooked dinner of meat and a pudding in nearly every school in the land. So the stew, the mince, the liver and the jam roly-poly were a defence measure. The Empire had looked at the children it would need in ten years and concluded it was cheaper to feed them now. Today the army is turning recruits away for being too heavy. Nobody has set up a committee.

It's almost as if Andy Burnham was selected by Palantir instead of being elected by the British people!
