Rafael Vivas (@rfvivas) dropped out of high school, got kicked out of his house, and was a billionaire by 32.
When he joined AppLovin, he had one condition: he had to live inside the office. Adam Foroughi built him a bed from IKEA. He said:
“The only way that we’re going to win is we’re going to have to out-hustle everybody else.”
When a partner called Cheetah squeezed AppLovin too hard, he started a game studio to compete with them and named it Lion Studios, “because lion is the only animal that can kill a cheetah.” It went from zero to over $250 million in revenue in two years.
Raf has a lot of ideas on dealmaking, persistence, attention to detail, why he’s against delegation, and why retiring at 28 made him miserable.
This is a fascinating conversation about purpose, performance culture, and staying in the game.

Weekend hack: HackerTube. I was annoyed with YouTube's recommendations so I had Claude filter down 43M comments over 20 years of HN to 6,454 videos that keep being recommended. *Significantly* better viewing experience, ~2 hours with Opus 5.5:
hackertube.org/
- Excellent recs without any logins (state is kept in local browser session)
- Thumbnail is a representative frame from middle of the video instead of the super duper A/B test hyper-optimized user uploads
- Underlying data from the comment analysis as one zip file, point your Claude at it and ask for your own version
- HackerTube Longs ✊
A bit more on the process:
I use Claude Code (desktop app for Mac), Opus 5.5 on Medium effort as my default. I only talk to Claude and have it do everything, the only "manual work" I helped with in tandem was in the browser (reminiscent of MenuGen): 1) I had to create some kind of API key from Google Cloud UI to query YouTube for video metadata, 2) I booted up a VPS box for serving and 3) I bought the domain name. Once the box was up I gave Claude the IP and told it update, secure, harden, deploy and optimize the code, and it did the whole thing.
Many awesome projects that would have normally taken weeks/months even can now be few-shotted for breakfast. What else are we not thinking of.
Everything that happened in the data center world today (Nov 1, 2026)
Korea shipped $56.4B of chips in October, +259%. Same weekend: OpenAI cut its raise by $10B and S&P moved Meta to a negative outlook.
FINANCING
- OpenAI reportedly cut its round to ~$20B from ~$30B and its valuation to $1.25T from $1.4T. Some investors trimmed allocations, so the first close is seen under $20B. UAE investors incl. MGX lead (FT, CNBC)
- S&P moved Meta's AA- outlook to negative. It now sees free operating cash flow of -$39B in 2026 and -$71B in 2027. Meta disagrees. S&P also cut Broadcom's outlook to stable on customer concentration (Reuters, CNBC)
- Amazon set up supplier financing to borrow up to $80B against hardware it buys, drawable Q1 2027 to Q3 2028 and secured on the gear. Total commitments hit $883B, +36% q/q (Amazon 10-Q, Bloomberg)
- CoreWeave, Nebius and Nscale have effectively been shut out of the bond market in recent weeks. CoreWeave's 9.75% bonds now yield 15%+. Lambda reportedly cut its target valuation to $13B from $14.5B, and Nscale's IPO is leaning to December (WSJ)
- Alphabet, Meta, Microsoft, Amazon and Oracle now hold $3T+ of future commitments: $1.3T in leases, some up to 30 years, and $1.9T in other purchases. Alphabet alone is over $1T (Bloomberg)
CHIPS + MEMORY
- Korea's October chip exports rose 259% to $56.4B, second only to September's record. Total exports +93.7% to $115.3B. Computer exports, led by server SSDs, +497% to $5.9B (MOTIE, Yonhap)
- Same release: DDR5 16Gb fixed price rose to $50 from $48, while NAND 128Gb stayed flat at $30.6. Transformer, wire and cable exports hit a record $2.0B, +74%, on AI data centers (MOTIE)
- Altman made a surprise Korea trip Saturday: a talk with ~50 Samsung presidents incl. chip chief Jun Young-hyun, then lunch with SK's Chey and SK hynix execs on HBM supply and AI data centers. No deals announced (Dong-A Ilbo, Seoul Economic)
- Follow-up: Foxconn's chairman says capacity is fully booked for at least 18 months. AI server share ~40% now, ~45% next year, 50% possible. "Overinvestment will kill the company" (CNBC, Economic Daily News)
POWER + GRID
- Chevron says its 2.67GW gas project for Microsoft's West Texas campus still targets first power in 2028 despite the Texas permit pause. No final investment decision yet, permits and financing still open (Bloomberg)
- A federal judge denied xAI's motion to dismiss the NAACP's Clean Air Act suit over the gas turbines powering Colossus, ruling they aren't exempt mobile sources. The case proceeds (TechCrunch)
MARKETS
- October: chip index -15.4%, Nasdaq -5.3%, its worst month since March 2025. CoreWeave -37% and Nebius -35% on the month (TheStreet)
- Foreigners sold a record NT$994B of Taiwan stocks in October, ~39% of it TSMC. In Korea they net sold ~18.7T won as KOSPI lost ~1,022T won of market cap (Economic Daily News, Financial News)
- China's official factory PMI fell to 49.3 from 50.1, back below 50. High-tech manufacturing held at 51.3 (NBS)
WEEK AHEAD
- Mon: Apple, Palantir. Tue: AMD, Arista, Supermicro (preannounced $18.5-19.5B) and US midterms with 41 local data center ballot measures. Wed: Qualcomm, Treasury refunding. Fri: jobs report, Micron Taoyuan union talks (company IR, Ballotpedia)
What it all means: The physical demand data still looks great. Korea shipped $56B of chips in one month and Foxconn is booked 18 months out. The money side cracked again this weekend. OpenAI took a third off its raise, S&P put Meta on negative outlook, Amazon is borrowing against its own servers, and the neoclouds can't sell a bond. When the best borrowers start pledging hardware, the weak ones get repriced first. AMD and Arista on Tuesday tell us if orders hold while funding tightens. Supply is sold out, the question is who pays for it.

Intel had its worst day since 1974, the chip index lost 7.2%, and Anthropic's own chip financier now expects it to be rated junk.
FINANCING
- Blackstone, anchor of the $63B Anthropic chip deal, reportedly told investors it now expects Anthropic to get a high junk rating, double-B range, after its IPO. It had said investment grade before 2027 (FT, TechCrunch)
- Nvidia is reportedly in talks to guarantee billions of construction and power debt for Nscale's West Virginia campus. Its first 460MW building carries a $44.6B Anthropic contract. Nothing signed yet (The Information, Bloomberg)
- Banks led by Morgan Stanley shelved a bond sale to offload part of a ~$15B loan for the Anthropic-tied Hubbard, Texas data center after Texas froze new projects for a grid risk audit. Deal size reportedly $5-7B (Bloomberg)
- India's AM Intelligence reportedly seeks up to $3B in bonds and loans to pay for ~29,000 Nvidia Rubin GPUs, 100MW across India and Malaysia (Bloomberg, CNBC)
CHIPS + MEMORY
- Tokyo Electron: Q2 revenue +21% to 588.5B yen, net +27%. First full-year guide: 3.7T yen revenue, 1.169T yen operating profit (+87%), above estimates. New 150B yen buyback. CFO: "no signs that this is slowing down" (Tokyo Electron, Reuters)
- Kioxia guided Oct-Dec operating profit to 2T yen vs ~2.35T expected. Its NAND prices rose mid-20s% last quarter after ~70% the quarter before, and are now seen up only low single digits with flat bits. Stock -7% Friday (Kioxia, Bloomberg)
- CXMT: Q3 revenue 118.7B yuan, +613% y/y, net profit 54.4B yuan, gross margin ~89.5%. Up to 2B yuan buyback. It says global DRAM is in short supply (CXMT, National Business Daily)
- Foxconn's chairman says a new OpenAI tie-up is in the works after meeting Altman Friday. "No AI bubble," double-digit growth next year, more expansion in Houston where it builds Nvidia servers (Reuters)
POWER + GRID
- PJM refiled its one-time backstop to buy ~6,800MW of new capacity, billed to the large loads driving it. Bidding March 1-28, 2027, deals up to 15 years, capped at a $555/MW-day average. Needs FERC approval (PJM, APPA)
- Xcel raised its 5-year capex plan 17% to $70B, ~$7B for contracted data centers. It expects to sign 4GW more data center deals by end-2027, worth up to ~$10B more outside the plan (Utility Dive)
- Follow-up: Hermantown, Minnesota approved all six resolutions for Google's data center late Friday after four hours of mostly opposed public comment (Northern News Now)
MARKETS
- Friday: Nasdaq -2.86%, chip index -7.20%, 29 of 30 members down. Intel -28.6%. AMD -10.9%, Qualcomm -11.1%, TSMC ADR -6.0%, Broadcom -5.5%, Micron -5.3%, Nvidia -4.2%. Amazon only -1.4% (Yonhap Infomax, CNBC)
- Optics, storage and neoclouds sold off too: Sandisk -13.5%, AAOI -12.8%, Coherent -11.3%, Astera -10.9%, Nebius -10.4%, Marvell -10.1%, CoreWeave -9.7%, Lumentum -8.6%, Vertiv -5.5% (market data)
- Fed funds futures now price ~72% odds of a December rate hike. VIX +13% to 19.4 (CME FedWatch via Yonhap Infomax)
- Asia's week: KOSPI still +3.25% despite Friday's -3.48%. SK hynix +11.0% on the week, Samsung +4.4% (Money Today)
What it all means: The order books still say sold out. Tokyo Electron sees no slowdown, CXMT runs an ~89% gross margin, Foxconn says no bubble. The cracks are in price and funding. Kioxia just told us NAND price gains are slowing to a crawl. And the money keeps getting harder: Anthropic heading to junk, a Texas bond shelved, Nvidia weighing co-signing a customer's construction loan. Add rate-hike odds and I don't think a 7% chip-index day is the end of it. Demand isn't the question, who can still fund it is.

Everything that happened in the data center world today (Oct 30, 2026)
Amazon spent $77B in one quarter and Intel lost almost a quarter of its value overnight. Asia didn't wait for New York: KOSPI -3.5%, SK hynix -7%.
HYPERSCALERS
- Amazon Q3: AWS +39% to $46.0B, its fastest in nearly five years. Capex $77.3B vs ~$58.7B expected. 2026 guide held at ~$220B, and Jassy says it spends "meaningfully more" in 2027 (Amazon, CNBC)
- Amazon's trailing free cash flow fell to -$42.4B from -$7.6B a quarter ago. EPS and revenue missed, Q4 sales guide midpoint below the Street. Stock -6% premarket (Amazon, CNBC)
- Jassy sees AWS growing over 40% in both 2027 and 2028. Its chips business is growing triple digits, and Trainium will be sold outside AWS late in 2027 (Amazon, CNBC)
CHIPS
- Intel Q3: revenue $16.5B, +21%. Data center and AI +78% to $7.3B. But Q4 guide is $15-16B vs $17.1B expected, EPS 25c vs 43c. Stock -23% premarket (Intel, CNBC)
- Intel says server demand far exceeds supply, short on wafers and EMIB substrates into 1H 2027. An accident shut its Israel Fab 28 for ~2 weeks, a ~$300M Q4 hit. PC units seen -12% this year, -10% in 2027 on memory costs. No positive free cash flow in 2027 as capex rises (Intel call)
- Follow-up: Lumentum fell 7.5% premarket as the Marvell talks stay unconfirmed. Morningstar puts deal odds below 50%. Marvell closed -13.2% Thursday (Investing, market data)
MEMORY
- Sandisk: revenue $11.0B, +23% q/q. Data center $4.8B, +61% q/q, at an 85% gross margin. Next quarter guided to $12.2-12.6B, plus an 8-for-1 split. Stock still -3% after hours (Sandisk, CNBC)
PARTS + PACKAGING
- Murata raised its full-year operating profit forecast to 520B yen from 430B on data center demand. Computer-related sales +61% in H1. It will put ~1T yen into MLCC capacity through FY2030. Stock still -9.5% (Murata)
- Samsung Electro-Mechanics signed an 879.3B won AI server MLCC deal running Dec 2026-Dec 2027, its 8th long-term deal this year. It expects over half of 2027 MLCC sales on long-term contracts (Digital Today)
- Ibiden sees AI GPU and ASIC substrate demand growing 5.4x by 2030 and added ~151B yen of new capex. Stock still went limit-down, -15%, on Intel (Economic Daily News)
- Delta Electronics: record Q3 sales, AI is now ~half of revenue, but gross margin fell to 34.1% on inventory write-downs as customers shifted orders. It cites shortages of parts, power and labor delaying builds. Limit-down (Newtalk, CNA)
POWER
- AEP raised its five-year capex plan 30% to $100B: $20B for gas plants, $37B for transmission. Contracted large load +22% to 84GW, led by SB Energy's 10.4GW Ohio campus (Utility Dive)
MARKETS
- Thursday: Nasdaq -1.37%, chip index -1.42%. Alphabet -12.6%, Micron -5%, Amazon -4.3% before its report (Reuters, market data)
- KOSPI -3.48% to 5,730, a sell sidecar hit, foreigners sold ~1.8T won. SK hynix -7.1%, Samsung -3.0%, Samsung Electro-Mechanics -7.5% (Chosun Biz, Yonhap)
- Nikkei -2.12%, Tokyo Electron -5%, Advantest ~-6%. BOJ held at 1.25% but will sell more ETFs from January. Taiwan -2.49%, TSMC -1.86%, PCB names down up to ~8% (Maeil Business, CNA)
What it all means: The supply chain keeps printing records and keeps getting sold. Murata, Sandisk, Ibiden and Delta all showed AI demand running hot, and all fell. Amazon held capex and still dropped because the cash went deeply negative. Intel is the cleaner warning: servers are sold out, but PCs are being crushed by memory prices, so the AI build is starting to eat the rest of tech. My read: until a hyperscaler shows capex turning into free cash flow, every beat gets sold.

Leopold Aschenbrenner thinks interest rates could go above 10% before the end of the decade.
He's not calling it the base case. He says there's "at least a serious chance."
His reasoning: if AI drives explosive growth, companies borrow like crazy to build clusters and then robot factories. And people expecting much higher future growth are less willing to save today. Both push rates up.
"I don't think anyone is expecting interest rates to go above 10%, real interest rates. There's at least a serious chance of that before the decade is out."
Why $INTC is down ~20% after hours:
1. PC slowdown. Rising memory prices are crushing PC demand. Client revenue is guided down 20%+ next quarter, and Intel expects the slowdown to last at least through the first half of next year. The CFO: "we are not optimistic about next year."
2. The Israel fab explosion. A ~$300M revenue hit this quarter and another next quarter.
What's still working:
- Data center & AI revenue +78%, best growth in 15 years. Demand is bigger than supply.
- 18A yields improving at a double-digit rate.
- 14A on track for 2027 risk production.
This quarter was fine. PCs stay weak for at least the next two.

$TMDX FLIGHT TRACKER UPDATE
Proprietary data is the most valuable asset in the world of AI and I was using a complicated bot to scrape the flight data from another website.
On Oct 28 (yesterday), the other website stopped automated scrapping of data ( save their proprietary data) and hence it was showing zero flights in the last 24 hours.
We are working on a fix.
