Labeling Muslims as “unindicted co-conspirators” is one of the most un-American things our government has ever done. Imam Siraj Wahhaj was one of more than 170 people whose names were placed on a secret list. Not because they were charged or convicted, but because they were Muslim and outspoken at a time when fear ruled reason. They were branded before they were even heard. Their reputations were destroyed while they still stood in line to defend the very country that turned on them. Years later, courts ruled the practice illegal because it violated the foundation of due process - the principle which this nation was built on. But by then, the harm had already been done. Careers ended. Families suffered. Communities grew silent. This was not justice. This was fear-mongering masqueraded as patriotism. And history will remember how America failed some of its most loyal citizens when they needed it most.
