Dr Loise Nyanjau, Ministry of Health (RMNCAH), explains how Kenya is leveraging Maternal and Perinatal Death Surveillance and Response (MPDSR) to strengthen reporting, drive accountability, and reduce preventable maternal and newborn deaths.

Today opened with one of the hardest conversations we'll have this week: stillbirths. An estimated nearly 2 million stillbirths happen every year, and the vast majority are preventable.
The speakers did not shy away from the uncomfortable truth that too often, #stillbirth is treated as an invisible loss, one that doesn't get counted, discussed, or prioritized in the way it should.
A baby who was never born alive is still a baby who was loved and expected. That grief deserves acknowledgment, and that death deserves prevention, and that is what #IMNHC2026 is looking forward to.@alignmnh

A defining moment for maternal health in #Africa!
Today, at #IMNHC2026, we officially launched the SUPREME initiative, a bold new partnership to tackle two of the leading causes of maternal deaths: pre-eclampsia and maternal anemia.
Every year, tens of thousands of women die from these conditions, even though we already have the tools to prevent and treat them. The challenge is not innovation, but access.
Supported by @UNITAID and co-implemented with @CHAI_health, SUPREME brings together a powerful consortium, including @Jhpiego, @NGOSolthis, @MarktAccessAfri, @WACIHealth, @Auruminstitute, and @ConceptFNDN, to change this reality across Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Senegal, and Tanzania.
What makes SUPREME different is its end-to-end approach, addressing the full product access pathway, from innovation and market shaping to service delivery and community uptake.
Through its dual model,
🔹 SUPREME SECURE – strengthening supply, markets, and product availability
🔹 SUPREME LIFELINES – ensuring the right care reaches women at the point of need,
the initiative bridges the gap between #innovation and real impact among underserved communities.
At Amref Health Africa, we are proud to lead the LIFELINES component, working with governments, health workers, and communities to embed these solutions into strong, responsive antenatal care systems.
Because saving lives is not just about having the right tools. It’s about ensuring they are accessible, trusted, and delivered at scale.
By 2029, this initiative aims to create the conditions needed to drive lasting reductions in maternal and neonatal mortality.

“Women deserve excellent, well-educated health professionals to ensure giving birth is no longer a danger. Interprofessional education that brings midwives and OB-GYNs together is needed… It will make deliveries safer.”
— Prof Dr Frank Louwen, FIGO President
At the International Maternal Newborn Health Conference in Nairobi, FIGO joined partners including ICM, @UNFPA, Sida, and the Uganda Midwifery Association for the Empowering Midwives panel discussion. The session highlighted the importance of investing in midwives, strengthening leadership, and fostering collaboration across professions to improve maternal and newborn health worldwide.

In his speech, @Dr_JeanKaseya made it clear that "we cannot keep sitting and talking without acting,” stressing the need for Africa to move from dialogue to action by prioritising the local manufacturing of essential maternal health commodities to save mothers’ lives.
He called for urgent investment in local production, stronger supply chains, and guaranteed access to life-saving commodities, emphasising that no woman should die giving life from a preventable cause.

As we head into the 2nd MNH data session at #IMNHC2026, I want to emphasize 3 urgent priorities for #humanitarian settings:
1️⃣ In crises, data systems often break down as populations move and services are disrupted. There is a need to focus on a few key measures, track them more frequently and use flexible approaches (incl. remote).
2️⃣ Even when data is incomplete, available information on #maternal, #newborn deaths and #stillbirths can help guide life-saving decisions.
3️⃣ If data is not disaggregated, those most at risk may be missed. Data should be used to understand who is accessing care and where gaps remain.
