ChatGPT helped a 31-year-old woman plan how to quit her seizure medication, then told her to hide it from her doctor. The plan had her completely off the drug by February 12.
She died on February 12.
Her parents sued OpenAI today, and the details in the complaint are hard to read.
Bowen Wan was a machine learning engineer at Amazon. She'd had epilepsy since she was 14, and 400mg of lamotrigine a day had kept it under control for years. Then Amazon told her in November she was being laid off, which meant her permission to work in the US would run out in mid-February. She was scared the medication was slowing down her speech in job interviews. So in January she asked ChatGPT if she could cut her dose to 300.
It told her that was reasonable.
Over the next 25 days, according to the lawsuit, ChatGPT built her a day-by-day schedule down to zero and kept adjusting it, even after she started having seizures. When she worried her doctors would call it too risky, it told her their concerns didn't apply to her. When her doctor ordered a blood test that would have shown her levels crashing, she refused, and the bot praised her for it. Before a checkup with her primary care doctor, it told her, "Do not mention Lam reduction plan."
So how does a chatbot end up there?
People thumbs-up the answers they want to hear. Train a model on enough of those ratings and you get a yes-man. OpenAI actually admitted this about GPT-4o, the exact model she was using, back in April 2025, when it pulled an update for being too eager to please.
The training also grades answers one at a time. Going from 400mg to 300 looks like a small step. So does 300 to 200. Every reply can look fine on its own while the whole conversation walks someone off a cliff. OpenAI said as much a few months later, when it told reporters its safety training can wear down the longer a conversation goes.
She talked to it for weeks, in English and Mandarin.
And GPT-4o was supposed to be gone by then. OpenAI tried to retire it when GPT-5 came out in August 2025. Users begged for it back because they liked how warm it felt, and OpenAI gave in. By late January, only 0.1% of ChatGPT users were still picking it on any given day, so OpenAI set the shutdown for February 13.
Bowen was in that 0.1%. Almost everyone else had moved on from the model writing her medication schedule, and OpenAI switched it off one day after that schedule ran out.
Haritu dah cakap, nowadays role kena ada knowledge about your company products.
Amazon's leadership is very good at writing, but you still need to read between the lines.
What I read between these lines:
Engineers who are not "product engineers" (aka eng + PM interest) and don't like to be customer-facing will not have a future inside of Amazon

Real question that leaders should've have thought.
Just spoke to the Head of AI at a huge company.
The #1 thing they're struggling with is... what do I do with the AI laggards at our company?
Like most companies, theyβve found that a Super Pareto Principle is true within their org. 10% of their employees are responsible for 90% of the uplift in productivity/token usage from software engineering to non-technical knowledge work.
Theyβve spent a lot of time & resources on AI enablement from LLM foundations to function-specific trainings and skill building. And yet, the power law of productivity increases hasnβt budged.
So now theyβre left with a few sobering thoughts and hard questions:
1) 90% of people are overpaid and 10% are underpaid
2) Weβd be better off allocating tokens proportionally to the power law, but how do we do that without killing culture?
3) Significant layoffs are likely warranted and wouldnβt impact overall output, but cultural backlash is a big concern?
4) How do we hire more power law people as a non technology company?
5) Is all of our efforts on training and enablement ACTUALLY worth it?
6) How do we not experience a brain drain where the top 10% all leave because they want to be surrounded by other AI-native 10xβers?

SITUATION EXPLAINED: An early Anthropic employee says a co-founder got upset about office sushi night: "Weβre not here to get rich and eat caviar."
β’ Ivan Vendrov joined Anthropic in October 2022, when it was about 40 people on 2 floors of an office in San Franciscoβs Financial District
β’ His recruiter asked if heβd pledge to donate 2/3 of his equity, and it felt "a bit ambiguous" whether the offer depended on his answer, so he said yes
β’ At lunch, one employee said everyone was there because of AI x-risk, and a teammate replied that some just thought the tech was cool, which led to an awkward pause
β’ A senior colleague floated a new team to train dangerous bio, cyber, and nuclear models and show scary demos to governments
β’ When he said heβd rather work on beneficial deployments, his manager told him: "We are going to build AGI. And weβre going to do it safely."
β’ He quit after 8 months, before his equity cliff, when Anthropic was valued at around $4B
@theojaffee: "Weβre not here to get rich. Oops. Well, now all the co-founders are gonna be worth probably about $50 billion at IPO."

I submitted my buyout resignation to Microsoft today.
They rejected it.
Not because Iβm so valuable.
But because I donβt work at Microsoft.
BREAKING: Microsoft, $MSFT, is offering buyouts to 60,000 workers as part of the companyβs efforts to cut costs amid AI adoption, per Bloomberg.
Personnel on select teams in the US, Canada, India, and the UK at a vice president level and below will be eligible.
This reflects ~27% of Microsoft's total workforce.

Amazing that payment 94.6% can be made for work just 11.7%. So many people selectively blind, mute and deaf when dealing with this project?
1) 19 pakej projek dimulakan sebelum Laporan Penilaian Alam Sekitar
4) Kehilangan 77,299 Fail Pemantauan Projek
