NEW: After a council vote yesterday, the City of Calgary has released the costs behind the $2.3M budget for the independent panel review of the 2024 Bearspaw feeder main break.
$2.276M was spent on paying the panel including more than $1.7M for the panel chair.

I had to Vote No to the Huge Utility Bill increase because I agree with the Chamber of Commerce that it would SEVERELY impact Calgary Residents and Businesses.
I believe we could’ve looked at alternatives like:
-Pause the hike until we see if we get some infrastructure support from the Province or Federal government in upcoming budgets.
-Stretch out the spending and cost recovery over a longer period of time.
-Reduce or Pause some of the Huge projected infrastructure dollars for the Prairie Economic Gateway project
-Take the Cities utility dividend and put it into water pipes instead of General Revenue
-Sell some Cities assets which are Enormous
Sadly the utility hikes passed Council today by a vote of 9 to 6 so now more than ever Council must look at ways to reduce the proposed double digit Property Tax Increase.

Yesterday, I voted AGAINST a 74% increase for Calgarians water bills.
Unfortunately, Council passed this water bill hike in a 9-6 vote.
At a time when life is becoming increasingly unaffordable, this water utility increase is too much too fast. While I recognize the need for improved water infrastructure, especially with the many water main failures in Ward 1, more work needed to be done to identify other ways to secure funding before raising costs for Calgarians.
My unanswered questions regarding the potential of using the federal housing accelerator funding for water infrastructure indicate that not every avenue has been adequately explored before raising water bills for Calgarians.
I will continue to fight for Calgarians to have infrastructure that is both affordable and reliable.

Death spiral.
Not it is residential against businesses. Except when the restaurants go from $1500 to $3000 a month for water, they raise prices, then the residents complain, stop eating out, business closes and the whole tab hits the residents.
This ends poorly.

Councillor Pantazopoulos needs to decide who he works for: the bureaucracy or Calgarians. If he wants to run to be mayor next term, he has to answer that question fast.
He fought hardest against the government employee disclosure list and is now opposing basic financial transparency. When public-sector unions and administrators push back against sunlight, the pattern is clear: protect the machine, not the people paying for it. Basic economics is not complicated. When taxpayers and businesses leave for greener grass, the tax base shrinks. That means less money for infrastructure and less capacity to fund the vanity projects he supports.
His vote against a modest 2.4% reduction across five departments last November is what prompted a closer look at how the money is actually spent. Getting data from a single department took months. What turned up shows that far more than 2.4% can be cut without touching frontline services. That is not speculation; it is what the partial records already reveal.
A one-time $100,000 and a 150K annual review of a multi-billion-dollar operating budget is cheap insurance before Council locks in a four-year plan that will raise property taxes and utility rates for families and businesses. Livestreamed meetings and published votes provide process transparency. They let the public watch Council debate administration’s summaries. They do not replace Council actually seeing the line items so it can ask better questions and direct limited dollars to the highest priorities.
If the current materials were sufficient to identify savings, the non-priority spending already visible in the partial data would not have stood out so clearly. Rejecting a line-by-line view means heading into budget deliberations with incomplete evidence.
Taxpayers in Ward 6 and across Calgary will live with the consequences if Council approves spending requests it has not fully scrutinized.

‘Death by a thousand cuts’: Calgary proposes water rate hikes up to 95% for businesses ctvnews.ca/calgary/article/d…
Scarlett Presley retweeted
Calgary's City Council voted to MASSIVELY increase water bills on Calgarians and Calgary's businesses.
Industries are raising the alarm as large business consumers using 10,635 cubic metres of water would see monthly water bills of $40,914.46 in 2026 skyrocket to $79,991.54 monthly in 2030. Insanity.
But Mayor Jeromy Farkas doesn't care.
There was zero need for this cost increase and the same lapdogs that voted for this increase just voted AGAINST a motion getting transaction level breakdown for Calgary's businesses units to find savings.
Here is who voted to increase costs for Calgarians, businesses, and against finding efficiencies:
* Mayor Jeromy Farkas
* Ward 3, Andrew Yule
* Ward 4, DJ Kelly
* Ward 5, Raj Dhaliwal
* Ward 6, John Pantazopoulos
* Ward 7, Myke Atkinson
* Ward 8, Nathaniel Schmidt
* Ward 9, Harrison Clark
* Ward 10, Andre Chabot

Tough day to be a tax/rate payer.
Council is advancing water rate hikes of up to 74% for homeowners and 95% for businesses by 2030.
When governments raise taxes and rates instead of cutting non-essential spending, those costs get passed straight through to customers. Higher utility bills raise the cost of living, push up prices for goods and services, and fuel inflation, even at the municipal level.
Infrastructure is a core need. Terrible governance from the past council shouldn't fall on current tax-payers. Funding infrastructure by shaking down taxpayers and businesses while non-priority spending continues is just as a terrible choice as not funding in the first place.

DEI is coming to an end in Alberta.
The UCP are tabling Bill 33, the Justice Statutes Amendment Act, 2026 (No. 2), that will make the following changes:
> Public institution will be prohibited from hiring based on DEI.
> Prevent provincial entities from requiring employees to participate in DEI training.
> Training and promotions must be also neutral and not based on DEI.
Awesome! A useless, racist and expensive waste of time.
