We are at the 'ballot initiative to personally give me a billion dollars' stage of democracy in California.
European regulators love their cookie banners. All new European cars require you to manually turn off the acoustic warning signal that goes off whenever you touch the speed limit. Every time you start the car. Now the same "functionality" comes to FSD. rdw.nl/en/news/2026/rdw-appr…
California demonstrates the pitfalls of direct democracy: anyone can collect signatures and put an arbitrary proposition on the ballot. How about giving a few billion tax payer dollars to your own organization? No problem if you make it sound like it's for a good cause.

Everyone has opinions on how to raise a kid. Turns out AI is no different.
@Plinz breaks down the four types of AI parenting styles:
➝ Helicopter: the EU, and many people inside AI companies. Keep it tightly regulated and paced with plenty of state oversight.
➝ F-16: @ESYudkowsky and his followers. It’s way too dangerous, and we need to stop it before it grows, even if that means bombing the data centres.
➝ Free range: The @bengoertzel's of the world. He has very big hopes for our "non-biological children". Let them roam freely.
➝ Tiger: @pmarca and the accelerationists. Push for success, ride the tiger, and hope for the best outcome.
Where are you sitting here?
I sat down with 5 top minds in AI and asked them some of the field's hardest questions.
They agreed on one big thing. Here’s where they split:
1) Can we pause AI? No.
Every panellist agreed a pause isn’t realistic. @bengoertzel called it “sort of a joke at the moment.” He says it would take a global surveillance state to enforce.
But @KaiZenBickle said that if we could pause it, we probably should.
I fly a lot and have been tracking this stuff for the past few years using a Radiacode- a pocket-sized spectrometer. I expected much higher radiation rates on regular flights, but the data was actually fairly comforting. What you want is to minimise flying near the poles during space weather events- specifically solar radiation storms, when the Sun throws protons at Earth
It is wild to me that people aren't that interested in space weather (or even know how much it affects things!). That airlines don't avoid certain paths during solar radiation storms (S3+) is a shame - exposing crew and passengers to much higher radiation
I actively shift travel plans around space weather

Computer, visualize earth across 400M years
Computer built an interactive globe of Earth's 4.5 billion years from 14 open datasets, with its own engine moving 258 plates across 109 paleo-elevation maps.
Drag the timeline, or type a city to see where it sat 400 million years ago.

A new airplane only makes sense if it's at least 15% more efficient than what's already flying. Better aerodynamics and carbon fiber get you part of the way. The rest has to come from a new engine. Who are the best engine startups right now?
