The best part is even when you run into bugs when you're doing overly-complex type-system things that exercise the far edge cases of compiler capabilities—instead of getting frustrated, it's a sign to reread how_to/999_temperance.jai and completely reevaluate your whole approach! – at Rapid City, SD
It's interesting how Jai is probably the only language I don't think about when I'm programming in it. It is truly a language that doesn't exist because it simply doesn't stay on your way.

We live in very, very interesting times. – at Rapid City, SD
One of the things the data analysts on our side obsessed over was "composition"—whether the electorate looked close enough to 2024 for Republicans to win. And despite polls that showed a Democrat blowout, the data kept on telling us the same story: in some states turnout was merely OK, in other states it was downright amazing, and in no state was it catastrophic. There was a genuine sense of optimism on our team: our people were showing up. So, I asked the smartest data guy I know, does that mean we're going to shock the world? "No," he told me. "We might do better than the polls suggest. But the data is telling us that a lot of Trump/Vance 2024 voters are pissed and planning to vote for the other guys. Our voters are turning out, but they may not vote for us." Well, that looks prophetic now. Our voters did show up. In Florida, for example, the electorate was 9 points more Republican than Democrat, just a couple points worse than 2024. Undoubtedly there were places we could have done better on turnout. But the main problem is not turnout. The main problem is that many people who voted for Trump/Vance in 2024 voted for Democrats in 2026. There will be a lot of infighting and arguing over what happened and why that is. One of the pollsters I really respect told me that our economic messaging wasn’t sharp enough down the stretch. I’m sure that’s true. But the real reason we lost is obvious to almost everyone. Another pollster—one of the smartest people I know in politics, told me yesterday we’d lose the generic ballot by 13 points. I felt negative going into Tuesday, but even I was shocked by this. In his polling, he saw that a lot of Trump 2024 voters were angry and planning to vote for Democrats. He asked those voters who had abandoned us what would cause them to come back on our team. The top four answers, accounting for nearly all of the responses were: 1) End the war 2) Focus on cost of living/inflation 3) Put America First 4) Change our relationship to Israel Our voters showed up. And the above four reasons are why many of them voted for Democrats. This is according to a pollster who nailed the results. While many spent Monday attacking Rachel Campos Duffy for calling for a diplomatic resolution to the conflict, it turns out her political advice was sound. (She’s also a great person.) In the next few months, there's going to be a lot of gaslighting. Expect to hear any number of establishment politicians say the solution to our woes is amnesty. I'm open to the idea that we should change enforcement—by focusing more on businesses that hire illegal labor, for instance. But anyone pushing amnesty is lying to you. The reason we lost is the war. The president himself said so last night. If you'd like to argue it was worth it, that losing the Senate for the next 6 years was worth it, then do so. Argue it was a worthwhile cost to pay. Agree or disagree, that's at least honest. But everyone knows why we lost. And any honest conversation about where we go from here must start there. I remain hopeful about our country. To the people who are pissed off and want to say, “I told you so”: you’re right, you did tell us so. Take that energy into electing Republicans who share your worldview. To the people who are just pissed at the results, you should be. Let’s take that anger and get back to the work of saving our country.

Woah… I wonder… If those who said this all along, from the start, because they correctly pattern-matched the advocacy to other negative behavior and traits, were right all along… What could that mean with regard to other, adjacent issues…? Maybe it's time for introspection…? – at United States
Open-source "codes of conduct" are cancer and need to be retired; I deeply regret championing them. The inevitable outcome is an unproductive mob controlling projects through intimidation. Given enough time, it pushes away people who would contribute patches. Eventually, all that remains is an unproductive military-police class playing social status games.

From pure gut feel, I think the final boss fight regarding copyrights and labs god given right to infringe will be between Nintendo and a leading lab
You know Disney is past their prime by the way they are missing from the AI discourse. If this was the 90s, Disney would have engineered Mickey Mouse copyright infringements by all leading models and parlayed that into having a 50% ownership stake in every single lab.

Why are some gamers proud of Steams monopoly on PC gaming?
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Steam has ~70-75% of PC digital game sales and is called a de facto monopoly by many developers, but rivals like Epic, GOG, and Microsoft Store exist and sell freely. No court has found an illegal monopoly; price-parity lawsuits are ongoing. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steam_(se… techspot.com/news/110133-su…

Finally, the modern programmer has discovered a more cloyingly obnoxious form of unproductive artifice masquerading as productivity than “making everything ‘a TUI written in Rust’”. – at Rapid City, SD

Twice in the last 5 or so years, I have gotten into conversations with coworkers who have learned that I am pretty right wing and a christian. They are usually surprised because I joke around and swear a lot, which maybe I should work on, but thats not the point here. What happens is that we start talking about it, and in both cases, the coworkers were either atheist or vaguely agnostic. They start interrogating me from the classic George Carlin/reddit atheist stance. Its exhausting. But what I find is that when I turn it back to them and ask them what they believe in, they don't have an answer. They do the meme. "Be a heckin good person" is essentially what they say. They've sincerely never thought about it. They don't really have a belief system beyond rational self-interest. They are floating through life like this. They don't feel the need to construct or deconstruct a belief system. They are content to carry out the programming they have absorbed without much question. They always claim to be political centrists and make sure to point out that they want fiscal responsibility (they never have any idea what this would look like or take and constantly vote for people who don't hide their intentions to spend wildly). On the religious side, I will start to ask them philosophical and theological questions, to which they seem to not even understand. They think its weird to even think about or discuss these things. They may have learned about Aristotle but only in a biographical sort of way. They've ever actually had discourse or been challenged about this stuff. As eigenrobot says. They don't have any beliefs to interrogate. These people could be conditioned to consent to mass killings with 2 years or less of really good propaganda
one reason ive become less interesting is that people no longer pretend to believe in things and so there are no beliefs to interrogate most politics is explicitly schmittian now and no one is even bothering with the window dressing. people just want to kill each other

I'm both, and always have been (born 1991). All six movies are good, and both trilogies were immensely inspiring worldbuilding exercises that extended beyond themselves into multimedia franchises in ways that Kids These Days could never conceive of. A different, better time—gone. – at Rapid City, SD
I'm glad I grew up to be a "Matrix sequels are good actually" revisionist than a "Star Wars prequels are good actually" revisionist. There's far more nobility in the former.

I've been discovering new vibe coded file managers on a weekly basis lately and I've just gotten used to it. Most are toy programs. A couple of things worth mentioning here: - Vibe coding still won't give you top notch technical results. You can do better if you have the knowledge, even if you use AI to assist you. - Programming != building a product as a whole. - Designing a good UI and user experience is a whole different skill set. - Building a good brand is another skill in itself. - Creating and maintaining a good product website and presenting your product effectively. - Vibe coding a toy project and putting it on github is very different from selling it to someone and taking responsibility for maintaining it. - Marketing is again a whole different domain. Posting on social media, reddit, writing blog posts, creating showcase videos etc. - Building and managing a community through discord, email or whatever platform you choose. - Running your own company... The list goes on. Don't be discouraged by things like this. Put yourself in the user shoes. If you wanted a program that does job X really well, would you rather pay some money for a reputable product with an established community, reliable support, and a proven track record. Or would you browse github for projects where you have to download the codebase and build it yourself? And I'm talking about users who actually want to find something good, pay for it and get on with their work. Not those who complain on the internet about something costing money and not being open source. Those people would nag you even if you were on the toy project side of things. So keep your head up and do what you're good at. Let others copy you. That's actually a sign you're doing something right.
It was with great sadness that I discovered a vibecoded clone of a project I’ve been working on for a year. HOWEVER… Has web based UI (mine’s native) Linux only (mine’s macOS/win/linux) Less performant Maybe already abandoned? Maybe I'll be ok?

FINALLY, someone is making a “boomer shooter” by ACTUALLY programming it the way the boomers did—rather than wearing “boomer shooter” as a skinsuit stretched over Unity or Unreal (you can always tell). Nice! – at Rapid City, SD
My upcoming game doesn't run on any modern engine; it uses a custom raycasting implementation written in C. I’m not a big fan of game engines, they come with pre-defined approaches for how to do things, which I find limiting. 🤔 #indiegame #gamedev #SDL3
