My client is not registered for VAT - he was told to pay an assessment for someone else's VAT.
He had been erroneously linked to a famous snooker players brother - because his name is the same as my clients. (It's a common one!)
Until they stop such mistakes this is WRONG.
An interesting story in the Times which highlights the foolishness of giving HMRC the power to take money straight out of people's bank accounts.
Tax lawyer Simon Evans only found out that he apparently owed HM Revenue & Customs money when it was extracted from his bank account.
Last month he got a letter from HMRC to say it had taken £2,300 out of his account because it claimed he had unpaid tax. “There wasn’t a dispute, we’d never heard from HMRC nor had our accountant who has handled our taxes for many years,” Evans said.
“It turns out that HMRC had sent letters to an old address in London that we haven’t lived at in years,” he said. “This is despite the fact that all of our Companies House and tax returns are up to date with our correct address and our accountant’s address."
“If we owed this money we would of course have paid it. We wanted to know if there had been an administrative oversight, but over several calls no one at HMRC could tell us what we owed, or from what period it was owed. Our accountant is still trying to get to the bottom of it."
This is what happens when you give an incompetent public sector bureaucracy the power to take money out of people's bank accounts.
Makes no sense at all. @andyburnham is taking us for fools. He will suffer for it at the next GE...if not before.

That's funny because at my last strategy meeting with my accountant, they informed me I must use HMRC-recognised Making Tax Digital compatible software, creating an oligopoly for firms like Xero.
I must now also report my company's income every three months rather than once a year, as well as a final report at year end.
So I now have to pay for a Xero subscription.
And pay my accountant more for the increased submissions.
And fuck about with reconciling every three months, rather than once a year.
For HMRC to end up with the same amount of income from me as before.
Fuck off.
Just fuck off.
Fuck off all the way back to Yorkshire, then fuck off some more.

So, Elon spent over $280 million in installing trump. His platform X algorithm constantly teased white and Latino young man, that trump is their answer. He ran a lottery in the swing states to collect voters information. He called his buddy Putin to call in bomb threats in democratic precincts, and to shut it down for hours. He had SpaceX and Starlink in a precise position. The voting machines were powered by Elon’s Starlink. The swing states swung dramatically to trump. Elon knew trump won 4 hours before the election was called. His young impressionist son confessed to Tucker that it had something to do with SpaceX, and he knew it. The sweet boy told trump to his face in the Oval Office that he was not the president. Elon later, months after a tangle with trump tweeted, trump could never have been elected without me. Neither could the Republican house and senate. Elon said months before the election that it’s so easy to hack voting systems. Trump, in a moment of stupidity told the world that Elon knows how to fix the numbers with computers. This time Elon’s political PAC is running a scheme to nullify voters vote. He has created a fake help site called SafeVote to steer you to give him your voting information. If you tell him you are a registered democrat, good luck for your vote being counted. Please don’t click on Elon’s fake site.
