Nobody knows this for sure. The goal should be credible deterrence and maximal flexibility. We should be very very skeptical of those trying to take away options for the US, especially if taking away options is meant to reassure our nuclear enemies.
Useful presentation by SACEUR in Warsaw. In the nuclear age, any sensibel theory of victory is about escalation management and limited war. In contrast to the Cold War, the Alliance is in a quite comfortable position conventionally. No need to threaten strategic defeat to deter.

Chris Brose’s (Anduril, Chief Strategy Officer) Potomac Watch interview adds some important detail to the Arsenal-2 announcement: • America needs both inexpensive autonomous systems and nuclear-powered attack submarines. Each has a role in deterring war. • More funding alone hasn’t solved submarine production. Brose argues we also need to change how the work gets done. • Anduril has already invested roughly $160 million of its own money into the effort, including its California prototype factory. • The workforce plan: break complex jobs into simpler, technology-supported tasks so more people can contribute sooner. • Modernize manufacturing and certification together, while maintaining the same safety standards. • Anduril intends to share the production technology with Electric Boat, Newport News, and the Navy. Brose says the established yards could use it at no cost. • Arsenal-2 is being designed to adapt to future maritime systems, beyond its initial submarine work. • This will take sustained bipartisan support. Brose explicitly cautions against expecting an overnight jump in submarine output. The thread running through all of this is what we keep coming back to here: rebuilding American industrial capacity means investing in people, improving how we build, and getting new technology into established programs. If Arsenal-2 can help other shipyards improve alongside it, that’s a win that reaches well beyond Anduril. 🇺🇸 youtu.be/2qZtkOZlWQ8?si=bY2L…

What doesn't win wars: A stockpile of dusty ammo built by an industrial base that has withered away What does win wars: Spinning up major new production lines as soon as the world heads in a "hm, seems scarier" direction
Sure would be nice if we had taken the DECADE LONG PERIOD OF RISING TENSIONS as a warning sign that we DESPERATELY NEEDED TO GEAR UP FOR A COMING AGE OF RENEWED CONFLICT instead of pandering to isolationism

Sure would be nice if we had some of those munitions we sent to Ukraine available to defend our own troops and our own aircraft.

In 1987, the U.S. Navy had 15 aircraft carriers and a fleet of nearly 600 ships. Today, the fleet is half that size with 11 aircraft carriers. During the Gulf War, six aircraft carrier strike groups were in theater in the Middle East. Today, two.
The US Navy has 11 aircraft carriers. China has 3. How are we in need of more? Rather than making sure the ones we have are ready and fully operational?

I spoke to @BenSasse in March, and asked him how long he thought he had left. He said, then: “The trial’s going really well. I would love to see the kickoff of Nebraska’s football season"--Sept. 5. Today Bowling Green plays Nebraska as the college football season starts. And Ben’s still alive. wsj.com/opinion/a-public-ser…

I understand the logic that someone on their phone all day can’t be all that busy, but for me the hardest part of working from home with a baby was that the constant interruptions were compatible with scrolling or firing off emails but not with real reading or concentration.
